Robert B. Parker
September 17, 1932 to January 18, 2010
Born in Springfield, Massachesetts and Died in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Creator of the Spenser series of novels which has been wildly successful despite the continuing presence of the Susan Silverman character. Also writes the Jesse Stone and Sonny Randall series, and has written a number of stand alone novels. Robert B. Parker mystery novels are less about mystery and detection than they are about characters and dialogue. His dialogue sounds like real life without the ums and ahs, and without any people who don't know when to shut up - unless it was as a prelude to Spenser shutting them up with a well placed comment or punch.
Now that Robert B. Parker has died, I've realized that I'll even miss Susan when the last Spenser novel is published. If you haven't read the Spenser books, I envy you the experience of getting to know him. As a sustained creation there are few characters in detective fiction that belong on a list that includes Spenser. I'll reread the old ones and look forward to the one or two that are still new to me.
